Wood chips – a familiar material in life but you already know about its real uses. This article will explain in detail about wood chips and their diverse uses in everyday life.
What are wood chips?
Wood chips are small pieces of wood collected from the process of cutting, grinding or chipping wood. Wood size usually ranges from 5mm to 50mm, depending on the intended use. Wood chips are produced from many different types of wood, the most common are pine wood, eucalyptus wood, acacia wood,…
International standards for wood
Wood chip standards of the European Union (EU) The European Union has issued wood chip standards to promote the development of renewable energy industry from wood biomass. Accordingly, wood chips are divided into 3 quality levels based on parameters such as particle size, moisture content, impurities and thermal value.
- Level A1: High quality, suitable for use in small steam storage furnaces
- Level A2: Average quality, suitable for power plants and industrial boilers
- Level B: Lower quality, suitable for large power plants.
American wood chip standards In the US, wood chips are classified based on criteria such as particle size, moisture content, material and heat value. Specifically:
- Size: Most particles are 5-50mm in size, with a maximum of no more than 6% of particles larger than 50mm in size.
- Humidity: Maximum 50% in non-dry state.
- Impurities: Maximum 1% of impurity such as sand, stone, metal, bark.
- Heating value: Minimum 3,000 kcal/kg.
Diverse uses of wood chips
Wood chips are not only raw materials but also have many useful uses in life. Here are some main uses of wood chips:
- Pulp production: Wood chips are the main raw material for pulp production. The pulp is then used to produce paper, cardboard, and many other products.
- Particleboard production: Wood chips are mixed with glue and pressed under high pressure to form particleboard. Particle board is widely used in the furniture, construction and packaging industries.
- Biofuel production: Wood chips can be used to produce biofuels such as wood pellets and briquettes. Wood pellets and briquettes are renewable, environmentally friendly energy sources and are increasingly used.
- Surface coating: Wood chips are used to cover the surface of wooden products such as furniture, floors, etc. Wood chips help create a beautiful and natural surface for the product.
- As fertilizer: Wood chips can be used as fertilizer for plants. Wood chips help improve soil structure, provide nutrients for plants and limit weed growth.
- Barn lining: Wood chips are used to line barns for livestock and poultry. Wood chips help keep barns clean, dry and eliminate odors.
- Water filtration: Wood chips are used to filter wastewater. Wood chips have the ability to absorb pollutants in water, helping to purify water.
In addition to the above uses, wood chips can also be used for many other purposes such as:
- Make handicrafts.
- Garden decoration.
- Used as fuel in the fireplace.
- Cover the soil surface to limit water evaporation.
- As raw materials for scientific research.
Conclude:
- Wood chips are a material with many diverse uses.
- The effective and reasonable use of wood chips contributes to environmental protection and creates a huge source of renewable energy.
