1/ EIA Report
- U.S. manufacturers produced approximately 920,000 tons of densified biomass fuels in March, according to the June edition of the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Monthly Densified Biomass Fuels Report. Sales of densified biomass fuel reached 880,000 tons during the month.
- The EIA collected data from 76 operating manufacturers of densified biomass fuel to complete the report. The report does not include data on facilities with annual production capacities of less than 10,000 tons, which report data annually rather than monthly.
- The 76 manufacturers surveyed for March had a total combined production capacity of 13.17 million tons per year and collectively had the equivalent of 2,443 full-time employees.
- Respondents purchased 1.49 million tons of raw biomass feedstock in March, produced 920,000 tons of densified biomass fuel and sold 880,000 tons of densified biomass fuel. Production included 131,404 tons of heating pellets and 790,327 tons of utility pellets.
- Domestic sales of densified biomass fuel in March reached 59,354 tons at an average price of $218.92 per ton. Exports in March reached 828,225 tons at an average price of $201.45 per ton
- Inventories of premium/standard pellets expanded to 313,066 tons in March, up from 243,108 tons in February. Inventories of utility pellets reached 544,217 tons in March, up from 519,990 tons in February.
- Data gathered by the EIA shows that total U.S. densified biomass fuel capacity reached 13.26 million tons in March, with all of that capacity listed as currently operating or temporarily not in operation. Capacity included 1.97 million tons in the East, 10.5 million tons in the South, and 797,200 tons in the West.
2/ Key Findings:
- Production: U.S. manufacturers produced approximately 920,000 tons of densified biomass fuels in March 2024, consisting mainly of utility pellets (790,327 tons) and heating pellets (131,404 tons).
- Sales: Domestic sales accounted for 59,354 tons at an average price of $218.92 per ton, while exports totaled 828,225 tons at an average price of $201.45 per ton.
- Inventory: Inventories of both premium/standard pellets and utility pellets increased compared to February.
- Capacity: Total U.S. densified biomass fuel capacity remained at 13.26 million tons, with all capacity operational or temporarily idle.
3/ Additional Insights:
- Raw Material: Manufacturers purchased 1.49 million tons of raw biomass feedstock.
- Employment: The surveyed manufacturers employed 2,443 full-time equivalent workers.
- Production Capacity: The South region dominated production capacity with 10.5 million tons.
Overall, the U.S. densified biomass fuel industry demonstrated growth in production and sales during March 2024.
