More than 147,000 tons is the expected quantity of wood pellets exported through Chu Lai port (Quang Nam) in 2020, an increase of 406% compared to 2019.

Chu Lai port was invested and built by THILOGI Corporation (formerly Chu Lai Logistics) under THACO since 2012. This is a general port, which can receive ships transporting many types of goods such as containers, bulk cargo, liquid cargo, oversized and overweight cargo, etc.

In early June 2020, a shipment of 13,400 tons of wood pellets from Quang Nam Paper Materials Company was exported to Japan. This is also one of the items with a large export quantity through the port in recent times.

The selection of a port for exporting wood pellets must comply with strict regulations and ensure quality according to the regulations of the Japanese partner, based on criteria such as: fast processing time, ensuring hygiene, ensuring quality and quantity during transportation…

Before deciding to export and import goods, the Japanese partner sent experts to Chu Lai port to survey the loading and unloading capacity, means, equipment and methods of cargo handling, the ability to quickly release ships as well as ensuring the quality of goods during loading and unloading, transportation… and chose it as the port for exporting wood pellets.

In the past, Chu Lai port has cooperated to export wood pellets for many enterprises such as Asia Creative Energy (Quang Ngai), Quang Nam Paper Materials, Nguyet Anh (Binh Dinh), King Lion (Binh Duong), Tsung Chang Vina (Ho Chi Minh City). In which, Asia Creative Energy is the enterprise that has exported this item through Chu Lai port for the past 4 years.

Since the beginning of the year, the Company has exported more than 30,000 tons of wood pellets to ports in Japan, an increase of 388% over the same period last year. Evaluating the services of Chu Lai port, the Company’s representative said that the port has made significant changes in service provision compared to before, the quality of service has been increasingly improved with more reasonable costs. Currently, a number of enterprises in the Central and Central Highlands regions have also explored opportunities to cooperate with Chu Lai port to bring export goods through the port by methods such as containerized and bulk cargo.

With its convenient geographical location and traffic, Chu Lai port plays an important role in the logistics service supply chain along the North-South axis and part of the East-West economic corridor. Along with promoting the exploitation of domestic shipping routes, the port has cooperated with major shipping lines to open international shipping routes to major seaports in Japan, Korea, China, and India.

Recently, the port has cooperated with Zim Shipping Company (Israel) to exploit shipping routes and has been added to Zim’s Asia – Mediterranean – Europe route, which is a route through the Suez Canal – the shortest sea route connecting the Asia – Europe continent. Thanks to its improved operating capacity, Chu Lai Port is attracting more and more shipping lines and businesses importing and exporting goods through the port.

Wood pellets are a form of renewable biomass energy. With the characteristics of providing good heat and being environmentally friendly, the product is used as fuel for thermal power plants (replacing coal, oil) and used in heat generating equipment of industrial and civil sectors.

For export, the product must meet technical criteria, FSC forest protection certification (certification for forest managers or manufacturers of forest products ensuring criteria for sustainable development) and criteria, quality standards during the transportation and export of goods. Vietnam is currently one of the largest wood pellet exporting countries, with the main consumer markets being Asian countries and the US.
